Workshop: A Pan-Canadian systems approach to health system leadership capacity-building

Strong leadership is essential for driving transformation within complex health systems. A strategic, system-wide approach to leadership development can improve workplace culture, enhance retention, and create a more resilient workforce.

Developed by HealthCareCAN, the Health System Leadership Academy led an interactive workshop exploring how a systems approach to leadership development can strengthen the health workforce. The discussion emphasized the need for a holistic, strengths-based approach to leadership development that fosters innovation and system-wide resilience.

Key Insights

  • The Health System Leadership Academy is a holistic, practical, blended learning program that provides participants with leadership knowledge, skills, mindsets and relationships to change their practice and the culture of their department and organization. The applied nature of the program complements individualized development with the development of the ‘whole’.

  • A system approach to leadership development vs. siloed, individual development, is a critical factor to create the transformation we seek.

  • Participants to date have said that the program has shifted fundamentally how they lead and how they think and increased joy at work. Developing a coaching mindset was a key shift for participants, even at the executive level.

  • How we support our leaders has a direct impact on how front-line employees experience their jobs. This has an impact on retention and wellness. Leadership development must be strategic, not reactive. Leadership development is not just about knowledge and skill development – it’s about teaching individuals and teams a new way of thinking and operating in healthcare workplace. A coaching and strengths-based approach to leadership creates psychological safety and new approaches to addressing challenges and opportunities in a complex health system.
