Senior Communications Manager – Bilingual

Job Summary

Health Workforce Canada (HWC) is a new, independent organization created to bring together health workforce experts and those in the health care field to learn from each other and to strengthen health workforce data and planning, with a goal to ensuring health workers are there to provide the care people in Canada need.

As this new organization comes online, HWC has identified several early priorities to help address key health workforce issues in Canada. These priorities include pan-Canadian stakeholder engagement, the establishment of a set of HHR communities of practice, and the development of data dashboards and early HHR forecasting work.

The senior communications lead supports Health Workforce Canada in creating and executing a communications plan that sets the tone for engaging the health workers, employers, decision makers, provincial and territorial governments and Canadians.

The lead will develop and implement strategies to ensure awareness and impact for HWC through collaborative work with HWC’s internal and external partners.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop a communications plan that delivers a strong and consistent narrative for this new organization, and lead the development of content, reports and other material as necessary to ensure alignment across the organization in executing the plan.
  • Create multi-pronged strategy to execute the communications plan leveraging appropriate tactics for key audiences 
  • Work with HWC’s engagement lead and overall team to ensure alignment with HWC’s  broader engagement and knowledge to action activities and to ensure communications content reflects relevant and meaningful information for key audiences
  • Create and post communications content for various platforms (website, social media, meeting materials)
  • Work with web developers to ensure web content is up to date and aligned with communications strategy, and independently post web content as needed
  • Lead the development of corporate communications material needed, including a strategic plan, progress reports and other corporate material identified
  • Creating communications-related policies and procedures and providing advice and interpretation of policies and procedures for communications challenges as they arise
  • Support HWC team with tools and tactics for in-person and virtual speaking engagements, conferences and events
  • Liaise with contracted staff and vendors (event management, translation services, etc) to ensure project goals are achieved
  • In some cases, prepare speaking materials for Health Workforce Canada’s CEO, when required

Knowledge and Experience

  • University or college degree in journalism, media relations, multimedia or communications, or related discipline
  • Proven experience in communication strategy development as well as delivering on tactical work plans
  • A self-starter who is confident with providing direction and advice to team members 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in both official languages
  • Experience working with start-ups or small-scale not-for-profit organizations, with a fast pace and “all hands on deck” approach to achieving the organizations’ goals.
  • Proven understanding of social medial platforms and experience developing social media strategies
  • A strong writer with exceptional attention to detail

Other

  • Ability to meet travel requirements within Canada.

Health Workforce Canada (HWC) is a new, independent organization created in 2023 by a Steering Committee with funding from Health Canada.  HWC will bring together health care and health workforce experts to learn from each other and to strengthen health workforce data and planning, so that together they will help ensure health workers are there to provide the care people in Canada need. 

In its start-up phase, HWC has identified a number of early priorities to help address key health human resources (HHR) issues in Canada. These priorities include pan-Canadian stakeholder engagement, the establishment of a set of HHR communities of practice, and the development of data dashboards and early HHR modelling and forecasting work.
