Summer Student Position – Data and Planning

About Health Workforce Canada

We are a pan-Canadian, not-for-profit organization with a bold vision: to transform health workforce planning across Canada. Through advanced data and modelling tools, strategic knowledge translation, and network convening, we serve as a catalyst for system change

Just beginning our third year of operation, we work with partners who hold the levers for change—federal, provincial, and territorial governments, health authorities and employers, and the health professions that serve and support our communities. Together, we are building a co-designed, co-developed approach to health workforce planning that is grounded in data, informed by evidence, and driven by collaboration

About the Position

We are seeking a student to provide hands-on support in enhancing the Digital Front Door, an AI-enabled tool that improves access to health workforce data and knowledge, and to contribute to the work of the Data and Planning team.

The ideal candidate is comfortable working at the intersection of AI, data, and user experience, and can contribute across multiple workstreams in a structured and collaborative environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support AI testing and contribute to improving output quality (accuracy, clarity, bilingual consistency)

  • Contribute to exploratory work to inform future enhancements of the tool (e.g., environmental scans, technology review)

  • Contribute to the development and testing of an AI agent designed to enhance the tool

  • Develop knowledge materials (e.g., use cases, tutorials) to support tool adoption

  • Collaborate with team members across IT, content and product improvement activities

  • Supporting the review of existing environmental scans and prioritization of partner content

  • Participate in structured onboarding processes using team tools and workflows

Knowledge and Experience

  • Master’s or postgraduate student or advanced undergraduate student, including those from applied or polytechnic programs, in health informatics, data, public health, or a related field

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Interest or experience in AI, data, or digital products

  • Ability to work independently while contributing across multiple workstreams

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills (English required; French strongly preferred)

  • Strong Microsoft Office skills; virtual event tools are an asset.

  • Experience with scripting or programming (e.g., Python) is an asset

  • Familiarity with cloud or AI platforms (e.g., AWS) is an asset

What You'll Gain

  • Hands-on experience applying AI in a real-world health system context

  • Exposure to AI evaluation, digital product development, and innovation practices

  • Opportunity to contribute to a national initiative in health workforce planning

How to Apply
